Early Christmas

I don't have any pictures from our ugly sweater party because we unwittingly left our camera on my parents' mantle. We also left my big Christmas gift, a new winter coat, and a pair of Jack's pants. (This is what happens when you are attempting to hustle three kids and lots of Christmas presents out of the house at 10 PM when it has snowed three+ inches.) We left Jack's pants because he had leaked in them... because he had diarrhea... because, you guessed it, the plague has yet to officially leave. Last night we thought maybe it was just the last of the evil leaving his system, but then this morning he threw up a couple times and Baylor started having diarrhea again. I know I promised the previous post would finish the details of our health shortcomings, but it just keeps getting better and better. I'm of the opinion that they pushed it by having some "real" food last night, as despite the puke and such they seem ready to play today, so we'll see.

Anyway, the sweaters turned out great, thanks to my artistically-inclined brother-in-law, Joey. Steve, Mom, and I wore ugly Christmas sweatshirts courtesy of my mom's alarmingly diverse wardrobe of holiday-themed shirts. But Joey had run out to the thrift store and bought three atrocious sweaters for him, my sister, and my dad, and they had worked hard to transform said sweaters into true ugly Christmas creations. Candice looked like a gaudy present, Dad's green sweater sported a white felt reindeer outline, and Joey's Bill Cosby-esque sweater, which truly took the cake, featured a felt wreath and a "Merry Christmas" message.

The ugliness nearly took my breath away.

We had fun eating, exchanging gifts, and watching the Peanuts Christmas special. My parents, in true grandparent fashion, spoiled the kids, and Joey and Candice weren't far behind. So now the boys are playing with their new foam block set and new toy cars on their new play table, and there are a few more, bigger toys that we had to leave at my folks' house for now. Lest you worry, Charlotte received two new, diva-like headbands, along with lots of other pretty, spoiled-girl things.

We are so blessed!

Now we are resting, recuperating, watching season 7 of The Next Generation, and starting to get ready for our trek to Michigan, which we will undertake on Friday, barring any continuing illness. We'll be in Michigan for about ten days to celebrate Christmas with Stephen's family, and we're really looking forward to the break and the time with loved ones.

Also, I am remarkably calm today because Stephen has promised that the baby and I can get away to Wal-Mart to buy diapers, juice, and other necessities. That promise is keeping me sane.

isn't it funny that the thought of sneaking away to Walmart with your infant to buy diapers is the thing keeping you sane? Ah, motherhood!

Does this mean Steve's home now for Christmas?

I just think someone should recognize that this morning was my official Father's Morning of Horror in which I awoke to face one crib full of puke and the other with a squirming child whose pajamas were full of . . . well, not puke. Horrors beyond description. Yes, it was by far the direst situation I had yet been in as a dad. And I faced it WITHOUT WAKING CHRISTINE. That is, I juggled two disgusting kids and their disgusting bed-clothes while trying to keep as much of the horror off me as possible, piling the terror into a pile to wash, changing the diaper beyond description, and holding one kid over the sink as he finished vomiting. I was in rare form.

Tonight I will escape to the office. Thank the Lord (seriously) I still have grading that MUST be done by tomorrow at noon, so I WILL BE FORCED to spend a few quiet, non-vomitous hours in my office grading finals and entering grades on Blackboard.

Then Christmas break. And may God have mercy on our souls.

I also need to say that Christine is the greatest woman ever because she can face the Week of Plague and still write a post in which she says "We are so blessed!"

We had a similar bug here. I thought it was making its way out, only to be fooled. it gave us another go around, infecting the strongest of us (my husband). Not fun! I'm hoping it stays away for our trip to Michigan as well. Stay safe on the roads. My parents said (who live in MI) they're supposed to get several inches of snow on friday.
