This is the scene Charlotte and I left behind as we exited the house for a short morning of errands today:
Note Jack's toothbrush. They both love to brush their teeth and think it's great fun. If only we can keep them this enthusiastic about their personal hygiene as they grow older...
Anyway, the reason this picture is significant is because Stephen has declared today, Saturday the 13th of December, All Day Potty Training Extravaganza Day. He is in charge of aggressively potty training the boys, and so far he has garnered no mean success. When the baby and I got back home after being away for approximately an hour and a half, both boys had experienced three successes each. I was duly impressed, and they were thrilled to receive M&Ms for each other's successes. (You can't give candy to just one child--it just doesn't work.) Steve isn't so sure they are equating using the potty with earning M&Ms just yet, so we'll see if these lessons stick. For now, the three men are holed up in the bathroom for the better part of the day, reading books and watching movies on the laptop.
Fun, fun, fun! It's only enlivened by Steve's striped pants, I assure you.
Secretly, I am relieved he is doing the hard work for now. I have been dreading potty training for awhile now, and I firmly believe that no amount of higher education will prepare you for the absolutely grueling process that is toilet training a toddler. No, wait, two toddlers. Maybe that's why the whole experience gives me an ache in the pit of my stomach.
And, for the record, I just overheard Steve, as he was ushering them both into the bathroom after lunch, tell Jack that it was not time to brush his teeth.

Christine! This is GREAT! I remember our all-day potty training day. By the end (and for a few days to come) Oliver complained that sitting on the potty chair was starting to hurt his bottom. Maybe I should have been more selective about what sort of plastic seat my toddler's skinny little behind would be perched on for the better part of a morning. Poor guy. Now he just prefers to use the big potty and performs some pretty impressive gymnastics to get where he needs to be all on his own. :)
We're rooting for you, Jack & Baylor!
This post cracked me up. It made me all at once want to have kids and never want to have kids at all. At the rate I'm going, it's likely to be the latter, but who's to say? I suppose stranger things have happened...
are those little leg warmers on the boys? So funny..the 80's are coming back!!
